In Friday, March 30’s class we got down’n’dirty with various issues sparked by the Alexie story “The Toughest Inidian In the World”. Your job for the weekend is to read or re-read, if necessary, the story, and write a review (no longer than one page double-spaced). You, of course, may write about any aspect of the story you want. Some ideas I gleaned from class are below.
ideas from class:
--What is this a story about?
--Is this just a gay sex story? If you view this as just a story that articulates homosexuality, what is gained in your ability to analyze it? What is lost?
--Or is this story not about sex at all? Then what is it about?
--Do a character analysis of the reporter in the story?
--What is the ceremony of picking up Indian hitchhikers?
--What are the symbols of Coca Cola and dear jerky?
--Who, exactly, is the toughest Indian in the world? Is it the fighter or is it the reporter.
--What is the role that sexuality plays in this story?
--How is the sex not sex, but something else?
--Who is the hitchhiker? How can the hitchhiker be a displacement of the god Eros?
--What, exactly, happens at the end of the story after the hitchhiker leaves the motel room?
